I remember the days of smaller keyboards

I remember when I first saw the keyboards with both a number pad and another set of arrow keys. I thought they were too wide then and I think so even more now. For my desk the extra width on the right side of the keyboard doesn’t fit. So I’ve been trying to find a good replacement. But it seems like most smaller keyboards are very small, laptop size, which is smaller than I would like. Anyway here’s some things I found.

I should note that I disqualified any keyboard where the lower left key was Fn instead of Ctrl. I generally am looking for something 14” wide or less, which seems to leave me with 88 or 89 key keyboards (ie keyboards without a numpad). Also it has to be wired and cost less than $40.

  • Adesso AKB-220 (USB+PS/2) - flexible and waterproof caught my eye but 15” wide and has the column of characters to the immediate right of the enter key.
  • Adesso AKB-210 (USB+PS/2) - at 13.7” an improvement, but lacking home/end/page up/page down/scroll lock/print scrn/sysrq
  • BYTECC MCK-91 (PS/2) - although this also has the column to the right of the enter key the rest of the layout on this keyboard is pretty nice, it’s not missing any major keys, and it’s a svelte 12.4” (also sold as Adesso MCK-91)
  • BYTECC MCK-90BH (USB w/ Hub) - like the MCK-91 but USB with 2 port hub instead of PS/2.
  • A4Tech KL(S)-5UP (USB+PS/2) - 12.6”, very similar layout to the MCK-91 but without the Fn key functionality.
  • BTC 6100 (USB) - 13.1”
  • Evoluent Keyboard (USB) - as an alternative to removing the numpad it can be moved to left-hand side.
